Discernment Counselling

Discernment Counselling

Deciding whether to stay and work on the relationship or break-up/separate/divorce?

Do one of you want to end the relationship and the other wants to repair it?

Are stuck in the same cycles in your relationship, and not sure what is the next step?

Discernment counselling can help you decide.

Discernment counselling can help you decide whether the problems you are facing are potentially solvable. The goal is to help you gain clarity and understanding about the direction of your relationship.  Through a series of questions, you'll be able to decide whether:

1) you'll continue in the same path as you are now,

2) break-up, separate, or divorce, or

3) commit to couples therapy with possibility of separation off the table.

Whatever you decide, discernment counselling can help you make an informed decision.

How is Discernment counselling different from couples therapy?

Discernment counselling is not couples therapy. In couples therapy, both partners are committing to work on the relationship. You are going into therapy with the mindset that you are willing to put in the work, learn the skills, and make a change. However, at times we see that one partner wants to make the relationship work and the other does not. In this case, couples therapy can become exhausting for the couple as it requires commitment and willingness to change.

Sessions

First Session

The first session is 90 minutes. The therapist will meet with the couple to check in and to review the process. Then, the therapist will meet with each individual separately. At the end, the couples will meet again to debrief and decide whether they will book another session for discernment counselling or they are ready to commit to couples therapy.

Subsequent Sessions

Subsequent sessions are 75 to 90 minutes. Couples can choose to do discernment counselling for up to 5 sessions. Each session the therapist will meet with couple and each partner individually as you are each starting from different places. At the end, the couples will meet again to debrief and decide whether to book another session for discernment counselling or they are ready to move into couples therapy.
