What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of psychotherapy that helps individuals process distressing memories, thoughts, and emotions caused by traumatic or challenging experiences.

When a traumatic event occurs, it can get "stuck" in the brain with the original pictures, sounds, thoughts, and feelings. Because it is stored incorrectly, the brain cannot process it like a normal memory.

EMDR uses Bilateral Stimulation (typically eye movements or taps) to activate both hemispheres of the brain. This allows the brain to "digest" the traumatic memory, moving it from an emotional, reactive state to a functional, narrative state.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • At The Therapeutic Way, our EMDR therapists provide a safe, supportive, and structured environment to guide you through the EMDR process:

    1. Initial Consultation: We begin with a thorough assessment to explore your concerns, therapy goals, and determine if EMDR is right for you.

    2. Preparation Phase: Your therapist will explain the EMDR process, provide coping strategies, and ensure you feel safe and prepared to begin.

    3. Reprocessing Sessions: During EMDR therapy, you will focus on distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation (e.g., eye movements, tapping, or sounds). This process allows the brain to reprocess and reduce the emotional charge of the memory.

    4. Closure and Progress Monitoring: Your therapist will ensure you feel grounded and supported after each session and monitor your progress to help you reach your goals.

Sessions are typically 50 to 90 minutes long and the actual reprocessing work happens after a few sessions.
